Test Taking Tips for the Social Studies for the 11th Grade Assessment
1. Answer all Questions. Do not leave any questions unanswered, since there is no penalty for guessing. Blank answers are always counted as wrong.
2. Read the Question Carefully. If a word in the question is unfamiliar, break it down into a familiar word. Look at the prefix (start of the word), root, or suffix (ending) for clues about the meaning of the word.
3. Study all Data Carefully. Be sure you understand fully all data presented in the question. If the question asks for a statement or generalization from a map, chart or quotation, the incorrect choices may be true statements but not conclusions that can be drawn from the data provided.
4. Use the Process of Elimination. When answering a question, it should be clear that certain choices are wrong. They will either be irrelevant, will lack a connection to the question, or will be inaccurate. After you eliminate these incorrect choices, select the best response that remains
5. Revisit difficult Questions. It is possible that you will find several difficult questions. If you run into a difficult question, do not be discouraged. Put a check mark ( ) next to questions you are not sure how to answer. Answer these as best you can and move on to the next question. At the end of the test, go back and reread the questions you checked. Often the answer will become clearer to you on a second reading
6. When you finish. When you finish the test, go back to the beginning. Review your work and make sure you have answered all the questions. Do not disturb other students.
