In the spring they compete at the Children’s Music Festival of Houston and also perform for the Gulf Coast Orff Association Festival at the University of Houston. In the Orffestra, students play xylophones and many other percussion instruments. The audition involves reading notes from the staff, clapping rhythm patterns from flashcards, and playing a short tune on a xylophone. The audition tune will be sent home prior to the audition so that students may have a chance to practice. The Orffestra usually only accepts 30 members because that is the number of instruments available. There is no fee to join the Orffestra except for the $10.00 cost of a Shining Star t-shirt. In order to remain in the Orffestra, students must maintain passing grades in all subjects and a conduct grade of S or E in all classes.

Schultz Patrols |
We are proud to have a special group of students working as Schultz Patrols each year. Patrols work in the cafeteria, halls, and at car pool. In addition, they raise and lower the flags, assist children in and out of cars, help children with breakfast, and report to the adult on duty in their area. Often they escort a child or adult to a particular place in the school, or lend an ear when a little one needs a friend.
In order to qualify as a Patrol a student must be in fifth grade and have satisfactory grades and conduct. The term is for one semester, but some students choose to work the entire year. Students completing a semester will receive a certificate and a pin at the awards' ceremony in May.
If you have questions about the Schultz Patrol, please contact Mrs. Cathy LeJeune, TAKS Specialist and Patrol Coordinator.
