How To Write A History Paper
How to Write a History Paper
1. Before beginning, jot down a list of some of the important points you would like to make. These don’t have to be in any order; just brainstorm topics or arguments you would like to cover in your paper.
2. Make an outline. It’s hard to start a paper if you don’t know where you’re going. By planning ahead, you’ll know when you’re almost done. This is very important so you don’t run your ideas in a circle.
3. Never use the word “I”. History papers are about the past, not about you.
4. The first paragraph is most important to introduce your reader to your ideas. In this paragraph you should tell the reader the subject, the topics or arguments you’ll cover and a short sentence or two about your conclusion.
5. Each paragraph should be about a different topic or argument.
6. Avoid run-on sentences and remember to read your sentences out-loud. If you have to take a breath and there is no comma, your sentence needs to be shorter.
7. Write a conclusion, this should summarize the main points of your paper.
8. Make sure you give end notes, give credit where you get your historical information or facts.
9. Spell-Check Your Paper before handing it in!
10. Once you’re finished writing, read your paper out-loud, and listen to the way you’ve written your paper. If it sounds “funny” or unusual you may need to recheck your punctuation or sentences.
11. Have someone else read your paper and make suggestions.
12. Revise your work, re-do the spell check, and submit your paper.
