Mars Rover Competition
Nitsch Elementary competed in the Mars Rover Competition on January 26th 2008 hosted by the University of Houston and sponsored by NASA. Students who participated in the project had the opportunity to design and construct a Mars Rover to carry out a specific mission on Mars. The models were either a free-form model or a solar powered model. Each model could be made from items that cost no more than twenty-five dollars.

Nitsch Elementary sponsored 2 teams in the competition; the Mars Ice Busters and The Ancient Explorers. These two teams consisted of third, fourth and fifth graders. Four teachers helped guide the students through the project. The teams began meeting in early October after school for four hours a week. Students researched mars, designed and constructed their rover, and chose the mission that their rover would achieve.

When arriving at the competition the student groups had to stage their display that consisted of their actual rover, a student created book and display board, along with the simulation of Mars terrain using dust, rocks and sand. During judging, students had to articulate what they had achieved over the past few months and the new information they had learned about Mars. This dialogue between the students and judges included everything from how they built their rover to the mission statements they selected. Lastly, the students, parents and teachers were invited to take a guided tour showing the current science research being conducted at the University of Houston.

Nitsch is extremely proud of the two teams that competed in the competition. The highlight of the day was a 4th place win by the Mars Ice Busters team. The after school activity not only taught the students more about Mars, but it also helped reinforce their social skills. The students demonstrated strong leadership, teamwork, communication skills and gained additional self-confidence throughout the duration of the program

Nitsch was one many schools participating in the competition, but the only school representing Klein ISD. Because of the educational value to our students, Nitsch plans to continue participating in future Mars Rover competitions.

The students who participated in the program were: Uriel B., Christopher S., Khoa T., Andre V., Randall H., Chris C., Jazmine, Brea H.

The teachers who helped with the program were: LaTanya Stredic, Hewett Richardson, Nate Davis and Carla Ferraro
