LEND A HAND!
We are continuing a voluntary, school-wide community service program. The “Lend A Hand”
Program is designed to increase student awareness and involvement in service projects and
highlight the difference individuals, even children, can make in their community. A variety of
projects are planned to offer all students the opportunity to be involved in and experience the
gratification found through helping others.

On Friday, Jan. 13th, Mittelstadt held an Operation Interdependence Packing Party. Each student packed one c-rat (civilian ration) to be shipped to the troops. They collected over 3,000 toiletries and wrote over 1,500 notes. They also contributed $340 toward the mailing of these boxes overseas. With help from the Klein HS Baseball class, the elementary students packed 640 bags. Thanks to CATSS (Champions Area Teen Service Society) and to the Klein High School IPIE (Instructional Practices In Education) class for their contributions. This was a unique opportunity as we combined efforts with the community and our high school to impact and support service men and women who are protecting us.

This will be a school wide canned food drive to help feed needy families in our community.
PTO will be partnering with us for the month long focus during October.
Together WE CAN help fight hunger.
Free Rice
www.freerice.com

Who knew that by playing an online game, you could become smarter and help feed the hungry! The
United Nations World Food Program offers a website where you answer multiple choice questions
from Art, Geography, Language Arts and Math. Each correct answer earns 10 grains of rice. There
are 60 playing levels. If you answer correctly, the questions get harder, if incorrect, it becomes
easier.
Reminders:
-Do NOT use your actual name. Use your school user name and password.
-When waiting for the FreeRice email, if you do not see it in the inbox, check your junk mail.

Adopt a Grand Friend
This program pairs residents from local retirement and assisted living facilities with families who are
interested in making a connection with a senior citizen. An application/contract is required for
participation and requires student and parent signatures. This activity involves one visit every two
weeks. (ongoing project)
Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Collection
Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Collection
Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured child. Often it
means being gone from home for an extended time. Children facing serious medical conditions need
their family close by and hotels can be expensive. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home
away from home” at little or no cost to these families.
We can support them by collecting the pull tabs from cans. These aluminum tabs are all around us.
Get your extended family, friends and neighbors to help you collect them. We will take them to our
Houston Ronald McDonald House. They will take them to a recycling center who will give them cash
for the tabs based on weight.
