The Texas Bluebonnet Book Award is a special reading program for Texas students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Each year 20 new book titles are selected by a committee of Texas librarians. Students who read or hear at least 5 of the 20 titles may vote for a favorite title during January. Votes are collected from school libraries across Texas, and the author of the book that receives the most votes is awarded the Texas Bluebonnet Book Award. Students who participate at Metzler also receive a sticker, certificate, and a small prize.
At Metzler, our student votes resulted in a three-way tie for first place. Students chose
What You Never Knew about Beds, Bedrooms, and Pajamas by Patricia Lauber,
Crossing Bok Chitto by Tim Tingle and
One Potato, Two Potato by DeFelice as their favorite Bluebonnet Books. At Metzler, 82 students voted for their favorite book.
The state winner of the 2008 – 2009 Texas Bluebonnet Award is:
One Potato, Two Potato written by Cynthia DeFelice. Placing second and third in the state voting are:
How to Steal a Dog by O’Connor and
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Selznick. There were 151,631 students that voted in this year’s program statewide.
