How else can I help my child be successful in school?
What Can I Do to Help My Child Become Successful in MATH?

As a parent, you know that it is very important to be active in your child’s education. There are some skills that are very vital to your child’s success and should be practiced on a nightly basis. Practicing these vital skills will ensure that your child is prepared in the classroom. We would rather the students be over prepared opposed to inadequately prepared. I have compiled a list of skills that would be vital to consider going over with your child on a regular basis.

Counting Money- Help students to identify dollar and coin values as well as determining change amounts when spending money during/after family shopping trips. You can also have them estimate the total of the items as you shop and see how close they are to the actual total at the cash register.

Telling Time- Students can practice telling time using the hour and minute hands on an analog clock (traditional clock.) This includes telling minutes to the half-hour and quarter-hour (15 min., 30 min. and 45 min.) You can also practice elapsed time and ask them how much time has passed or what time will it be in a certain amount of minutes or hours.

Measurement- Students can practice using a ruler to measure items around the house or even using a growth chart to measure their own growth. Also, help students to understand the differences in capacities such as gallons, quarts, half-gallons, and liters using bottles or jugs around the home. Allowing students to assist with reading recipes on boxes as you cook is a great way to practice with fractions.

Math Facts-Students can practice Math Facts using homemade flash cards, dice from a board game, or a regular deck of playing cards. They should be able to know addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts WITHOUT counting on their fingers. Students practice this skill daily in the classroom, but it also effective if it is extended to home practice.
