November 2009
Food Drive - As we approach the holiday season, please keep in mind the needs of others. Once again, Lemm will be conducting a food drive. Please be as generous as possible, since these food items will be distributed for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We need non-perishable items. We would like to receive donations by Monday, November 16, so that we can distribute the food in a timely manner for the holidays.

Nurses Corner – Our students at Lemm have successfully completed their annual hearing and vision exams. I wanted to express a sincere thank you for all the wonderful support from the PTO volunteers. I know how precious your time is and we are grateful for your sacrifice.

We would like to encourage your family to consult a physician about receiving the flu vaccine. The flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. The symptoms of the flu are: fever, headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The flu is spread from person to person mainly when infected individuals cough or sneeze. Most healthy adults can infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop or up to five days after becoming sick. That means you might be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Continue to practice good hand washing, as this is vital to the prevention and spread of illness. Please remember that the students must be fever free for 24 hours without the administration of Tylenol or Motrin before returning to school

Have a wonderful and healthy Thanksgiving.

Crime Stoppers Safe School Program- In addition to other programs active in Klein ISD, a component to our safe school program with a track record for success in discouraging crime on campuses is Crime Stoppers Safe School Program. Students are able to report crimes anonymously by calling 713-222-TIPS, without fear of retaliation and receive a cash reward for information leading to the arrest, charging of an individual, or prevention of a crime. Parents are being informed about the Safe School Program in operation at their kids’ schools, along with other student safety issues, reward questions, and legal concerns. Parent groups may request a presentation by calling Crime Stoppers Safe School Program at 713-521-4600.

Garbage-The garbage dumpster at the rear of the building is for school use only. In the past we have had an assortment of household garbage added to our dumpster. It costs the district thousands of dollars to remove mattresses, gym equipment and furniture that is left in the dumpster or beside it.

Absences- If your child is absent for any reason, please send a note the following day to their teacher. Please include the child’s full name, the dates absent and the reason. On the day of the absence, please call the school at 832-484-6289 to report your child’s absence. The Klein Independent School District Board Policy states that the school must attempt to reach every parent each day the child is absent.

Sharing Food- The only food consumed by students during the school day on school premises shall be that provided by the school district’s food service department, prepared under the supervision of the appropriate school personnel, prepared and supplied by the teacher for instructional purposes, canned or bottled drinks supplied by the school or an affiliated organization, or food brought to the school by the students for their own consumption. With the joint approval of the campus principal and the director of the food service department, food for special student activities during the school day may be provided by a recognized commercial distributor. This would not include food prepared in individual homes.

Physical Education- Join us for this year’s field day: Traditional Style, races, competition and more. This year, we are hosting our annual Field Day in the fall on November 19th (Third, Fourth, and Fifth) and November 20th (for Pre-k, Kindergarten, First, and Second). Please look at the date carefully, there was a mistake on the volunteer form. Join us for the fun and cooler weather as we take activities and mix them up Lemm style for a great time. As always, you are cordially invited to attend or volunteer for our Field Day. We could not have this day without our wonderful volunteers. Make sure you contact the front office a few weeks in advance to get approved to be a KISD volunteer.

Parents Are Always Welcome To Conference With Teachers – In the event parents should have any questions or comments about their child in relation to school or the child’s schoolwork, the person for contact is the child’s teacher. Parents may arrange a parent-teacher conference by calling the front office, the teacher’s wireless phone or e-mailing the teacher. Just think, if every parent interrupted a class of 20 students for a 10-minute period, the teacher would have over three hours of interrupted teaching time. Teachers may schedule a time before or after school or on his/her conference period. Parents cannot just walk to the classroom during the planning/conference period because other conferences maybe scheduled or planning has been scheduled with instructional personnel. Please remember you are always welcome
to the classroom, we just need to have scheduled times for conferencing with the teacher. We ask parents to
go to the classroom, we just need to have scheduled times for conferencing with the teacher. We ask parents to drop off items such as glasses, lunches, or
lunch money in the front office. Our staff will deliver items to the classrooms.

Counselor’s Corner: COUNSELOR’S CORNER – ATTENDANCE: A KEY TO YOUR STUDENT’S SUCCESS
Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Studies also show that kids who are absent more often score lower on state tests.
Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year.
Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive.
Here’s how you can improve your child’s school attendance:
• Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
• Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
• Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.
• Don’t accept excuses for why your child “must” miss or be late for school.
• Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
• Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
• Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
• Lead by example. If children see parents taking off work for no real reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.

YOUR CHILD’S SUCCESS IN SCHOOL DEPENDS ON HAVING A SOLID EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND----ONE THAT CAN ONLY BE GAINED THROUGH REGULAR SHOOL ATTENDANCE.

Music News - Music Memory- Students are listening to recordings of selected music literature nearly every class period in Music. Each quarter, in grades 2-5, there is a listening test in which students must identify those pieces by title and composer. This test is cumulative, so by the end of the year there will be 16 pieces tested. For those students who need additional opportunities to hear the pieces, we have listening stations available in the library:
• Every morning from 7:30-8:00
• After school until 3:45
• During school with teacher permission
Students who wish to stay after school must arrange for parent permission and transportation home prior to arriving at school. Students will not be permitted to make phone calls for this purpose. More information can be found on our Music website.

CDs- We have a few Music Memory CDs left from last year. These are new CDs, but with last year’s selections. They are $7.50 each. If you are interested in purchasing one of these, please contact Mrs. Rhodes at (832) 484-6318 or wrhodes@kleinisd.net.

Manuscript Books (staff books)- There are still a few students in grades 2-5 who have not gotten a manuscript book (a spiral notebook containing music staves instead of ruled notebook paper). Students who purchased school supplies directly from Lemm should have received one with their supplies. For everyone else’s convenience, they are available for purchase in the school store for $1.00.

Grading & Tests- In accordance with our curriculum, nearly all assessments (tests, grading) in music are done near the end of the quarter. This means that few, if any, grades are taken prior to progress reports. The students have about 7-8 weeks to practice the skills and knowledge that will be tested. For those who require more practice time than our music class period allows, the core song for each grade level is posted on our music website every quarter. Students with internet access can practice at home, and students without internet access can request a written copy of the song from his/her music teacher.

Choir, Chimes & Strings- The Lemm Lion Choir and Chimes will perform in Old Town Spring again this year. We’ll be there on Sat., Nov. 14 from 11:00am- noon behind the museum. Come on out and enjoy a little holiday music to get you in the spirit of the season! (Chimes and Choir members—be sure to have your khaki pants, dark dress shoes and dark belt by then!)

December Holidays- The Choir, Chimes and 5th Grade Strings will also perform a concert on December 3rd. The students at Lemm will view the concert during the school day. Parents, friends and relatives may attend a repeat performance at 6:30 that evening in the Lemm cafeteria.
