August 22, 2011 TO: SIXTH GRADE PARENTS FROM: SIXTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHERS SUBJECT: BASIC INFORMATION AND DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES On behalf of the Language Arts Department, we wish to welcome you back to Doerre Intermediate School. In order for your child to have a successful year, we are providing you with some basic guidelines and information. The following supplies are required for LA classes: 1. 3-ring binder 6. grading pen (red) 2. package of subject dividers 7. #2 pencils 3. one composition notebook 8. package of assorted map pencils 4. kleenex 9. wide-ruled looseleaf paper 5. two blue or black ink pens · Each student has received a binder reminder which will be part of his/her daily supplies. · Each student is required to bring a book of appropriate literature to class daily to use during sustained silent reading. · Additional supplies such as construction paper, folders with pockets and brads, access to magazines and newspapers, etc. will be required throughout the year for use in completion of various activities. Students should have their supplies in class by Friday, August 26th. Should any problems arise concerning the purchase of supplies, please contact your child’s teacher. Students are required to have all supplies in class everyday. Six weeks’ averages will be weighted 60% major, 30% daily, and 10% homework. Please familiarize yourself with the Student Handbook published by KISD. Return to your child’s homeroom teacher by August 26th, the signed sheet from the front of the student handbook. Students are responsible for upholding the rules set forth in the handbook. In addition to the daily procedures, there are important days to be noted: (1) MAJOR TEST DAYS ARE Tuesdays and Thursdays. (2) QUIZZES ARE GIVEN EVERY WEEK, AND OTHER GRADED ACTIVITIES. Soon your child will apprise you of the LA grading guidelines, and we will strive throughout the year to keep you informed of your child’s academic progress. Should you ever have any questions concerning your child or the LA program, please contact your child’s teacher. We thank you for your cooperation and look forward to a successful year.
