Mathematics |
In math your child will learn about the calendar, how to graph, sort and classify objects, recognize position and location, identify, extend and create patterns, explore numbers (counting, making sets, writing, identifying and comparing), identifying parts of whole objects, oridinals, addition, subtraction, geometry (shapes), measurement, time (order of day and sequencing events) and problem solving.
We will learn to explore using manipulatives, problem solving stategies, technology and discussion.
Mathematics Vocabulary:
Students are expected to understand the meaning of the following academic vocabulary words by the end of the year:graph, pattern, left, right, number, greater than, less than, equal sign, sum, difference, rectangle, estimate, calendar and temperature.

1st Nine Weeks |
Your child will cover the following topics during the first nine weeks.
*GETTING STARTED:
Calendar Activities and Introduction to Graphing
*GEOMETRY:
Students will describe, identify and compare shapes.(circles, squares, triangles and rectangles) They will learn to describe, identify, compare and sort shapes by their attributes.
*SORTING AND CLASSIFYING:
Students will be identifying objects that are the same and different, sorting by one attribute or more, and problem solve.
*POSITION AND LOCATION:
Students will learn to identify the location of these terms (inside, outside, over, under, on, top, middle, bottom, above, below, before, after, left and right). We will practice by using manipulatives, creative drawings and technology.
*IDENTIFYING, EXTENDING AND CREATING PATTERNS:
Students will create sound, movement, color and shape patterns. They will learn to compare patterns, identify patterns in the environment, extend patterns and predict what comes next in a pattern. This is a concept that the students really enjoy practicing.

|
2nd Nine Weeks |
Your child will cover the following topics the second nine weeks.
*ONE TO FIVE:
Students will learn to count, read/identify, create sets and write numberals.
*SIX TO TEN:
Students will learn to count, read/identify, create sets and write numberals.
*FRACTIONS AND ORDINALS:
Students will share a whole by separating it into two equal parts and explain why a given part is half of a whole. They will also name ordinal positions in sequence. (first, second,
third)
*TIME:
Students will learn to order events in sequence. They will also determine the duration of time it takes to complete a task.
|
|
3rd Nine Weeks |
Your child will cover the following topics the third nine weeks.
*ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION:
Students will solve problems with guidance and model/create
addition problems with concrete objects.
*NUMBERS TO 20:
Students will use numbers and describe how many objects are in a set through the number 20.
*COUNTING TO 100:
Students will count to 100 by ones.
*CALENDAR:
Students will identify the month, day and date. They will practice singing the months of the year, the days of the week, distinguish week days from weekend, count the calendar way (1st, 2nd, 3rd...), learn about numbers and graph the weather.
*MORE AND FEWER:
Students will be able to tell whether a group has 1 more, 2 more, 1 fewer or 2 fewer.
|
|
4th Nine Weeks |
Your child will cover the following topics the fourth nine weeks.
*COMPARING NUMBERS:
Students will compare numberals and determine which is greater and which is less.
*GRAPHING:
Students will construct a real graphs and picture graphs. They will also learn to read a graph and ansewr questions.
*MEASUREMENT:
Students will practice measuring by length, weight and capacity.
*STEPPING UP TO FIRST GRADE:
Students will participate in review and extention lessons that help them to be prepared for first grade.
