Algebra 1 Guidelines and Procedures
Class Procedures and Grading Guidelines

Supplies: You will need a spiral, pocket folder, pencils, a red checking pen or pencil with you every day.

Tests - Math test days are Wednesday and Friday. If you are absent the day of a test, be prepared to take the test the following day unless you were absent more than one day. If this is the case, then a make-up test can be taken before or after school. If you come in the morning you will need a pass from me. Each test must have a parent signature and be returned with corrections before the next test. The test corrections grade will count as a daily grade.

Grading- Each six weeks grade will be determined as follows:
Major grades: 60%, consists of tests and any projects assigned as “major”
Daily grades: 30%, consists of class work, quizzes, and graded assignments
Homework: 10%, completion (4 homework assignments = 1 homework grade)

Semester average = 28% of each 6 weeks grade + 16% of the final exam
The semester average is the only grade that goes on the high school transcript.

Homework- Homework is assigned every day for practice. Work should be done neatly, organized and all problems should be done as demonstrated in class. Answers only on homework will not be accepted. All work must be done in your spiral. The assignment (page number and problems) should be written on the first line. All problems must be numbered properly. If you are absent or are unsure of the assignment check the web page for homework:classroom.kleinisd.net/webs/jsolomon

Pencil- Pen is NOT acceptable. Please bring 2 pencils with erasers and a hand held sharpener to class each day. Sharpening of pencils is restricted to the time BEFORE the tardy bell rings and AFTER homework has been assigned.

Calculator- We will be using TI-84 Graphing Calculators in class. Due to the fact that graphing calculators will be used in this class and all future math classes, it is highly advisable that you have access to a graphing calculator for use at home. A TI-84 Graphing Calculator will be available for your use at school, so do not bring personal calculators to school. When purchasing, any of the TI Graphing Calculators, i.e. 82, 83 Plus, 83 Plus Silver edition, or 84 Silver editions are fine. (The silver editions are hand held computers having more memory and capabilities for the $.)

Assignment sheet- An assignment sheet will be available at the beginning of each 6 weeks. You are responsible for the recording of grades and keeping your average. The grade you receive in this class should never be a surprise to you or your parents if you are keeping an accurate record.

Absences- Because this is a high school credit class, attendance will be counted according to high school rules. Credit may be denied if you have more than 9 absences per semester in the class. An absence is defined as missing more than 15 minutes of class (this includes being in the nurses office). Please keep this in mind as you schedule doctor and orthodontic appointments. **You are responsible for you make-up work. Get the assignments you missed from the homework board, by calling a study buddy, or from the web page. According to the student handbook: for each day absent, you will be given the same number of days to make up the work missed.

Tutoring- You are responsible for getting extra help when you need it. I am willing to give extra help before or after school on my own time. Please just let me know when you are coming. A pass is needed to come in before school.

Tardy- You are considered tardy if you are not in your seat when the tardy bell rings. Note: p31 #10 of Student Handbook. You should also have paper, pencil, homework, and book on your desk at this time.

Math Contests- There are several math contests offered during the school year. They are usually held on Saturday mornings at local schools. Math contests are a great opportunity for you to compete against other students on your math level as well as to challenge yourself to the max. I encourage you to attend, and will offer extra credit for participation.

Dismissal- You are dismissed by ME and not the bell.

Final Exams-There will be a mid-term exam and a final exam. These exams count 16% of the semester average. You must take these exams on the assigned days.
I will let you know the dates as soon as I get them. Algebra is usually the last of the exams.
Please keep these important dates in mind and mark them on your calendar.
Note: pg 5 #3 Student Handbook.

Please read and pay careful attention to theses additional pages in your student handbook:
pg 4 Section S #1,2,3
pg 36 #8
pg 38 #14

I am looking forward to a great year. Let’s work together to make this your best year yet!!
Parents, my conference is seventh period (3:10 - 3:50) each day. Please call or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns (jsolomon@kleinisd.net).
