DOERRE CHOIR 2008-2009
Choir Director & Music Department Chairperson:

Office phone - 832-249-5782
Conference time - 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.

Your student is a member of the award winning Doerre Intermediate Choir. 2007-2008 was an exciting year for the Choirs. They returned with two Sweepstakes trophies from UIL competition and both of the Advanced Choirs won Best-in-Class trophies at the Director's Choice Festival. The Adv. Boys won "Most Outstanding Choir".

This year will be just as exciting. Some of the activities already planned are: skating, bowling, caroling, a visit to the Renaissance Festival, 3 to 4 Combined Concerts, KISD Men’s Concert, Solo and Ensemble Contest, UIL Contests, Schlitterbahn/Galveston Fun Day, and a visit to the elementary schools. Students will be expected to attend scheduled after school dress rehearsals and night concerts as this is a large portion of their grade. A calendar is attached.

There are 4 choirs at Doerre. The Beginner Girls Choir consists of 6th grade female students. The Intermediate Girls Choir consists of 7th & 8th grade, new or former choir students. The Advanced Girls Choir consists of selected 7th & 8th grade students. Advanced Girls Choir selection is by audition only.

The Advanced Boys Choir consists of all male students from 6th to 8th grade. Combining the boys enables these students to become familiar with the male voice and to study the basics of music with those that have been in choir before.
The Beginning Choir uniform will consist of the Doerre Choir Shirt, black slacks (jeans are not acceptable, slacks should meet top of closed toe shoe), blacks socks or hose, and black closed toe shoes. The polo – type shirts cost $20.00 each and checks should be made payable to the Doerre Choir.

The Advanced and Intermediate Choir members will wear a tuxedo shirt, black slacks (jeans or Dockers are not acceptable, slacks should meet top of closed toe shoe), black socks or hose, and black closed toe shoes. Shirts will be ordered from Al's Formal Wear. The shirts are $17.00 each .

The tuxedo shirts will be distributed to the students during classes. If there is a problem with a shirt, it can be exchanged at Al's Formal Wear. No receipt is needed, just mention it was part of the Doerre Choir purchase. Intermediate and Advanced Choir members will be issued a cumberbun and tie to complete their uniform. Students will be responsible for these items. They will need to be and returned with a $5.00 dry cleaning fee at the end of the year.

Many students have donated tuxedo shirts . If you are interested in having your student borrow one a tuxedo shirt, please send me a note on your parent letter and your student may try on what is available. These items will need to be cleaned and returned at the end of the year.

The complete uniform will need to be purchased before October 1st. The Advanced Choirs will perform on a Joint Choir Concert at the Centrum on October 7th. The Doerre Fall Concert is October 16th for all choirs, at Doerre.

Grades in music will be based on the student's attitude, cooperation, musical progress, class work, homework, tests, attendance at after school rehearsals and concerts and being prepared for class with all necessary supplies. Students are expected to practice at least 15 minutes a night with their CD, music or class notes. Attendance at after school rehearsals and concerts are mandatory. If a student misses a concert, they will be assigned an alternative assignment. Concerts make up a large portion of a student’s grade. Everything we do in the classroom prepares the student for our concerts. If there is a problem, please contact Mrs. Travis in advance.

Students will also be expected to purchase supplies for choir. The supplies needed every day in choir are two pencils, one pen, a yellow highlighter, 20 sheets of notebook paper, zippered pencil bag, (black folder/ provided by teacher) class notes and music. Intermediate and Beginning Choir will also need to bring in a box of tissues.
If parent letters/ money, etc. will be late, please send a note with your student as grades will be taken on that day.
Choir members are expected to take care of their music. Music should be treated as a textbook and students will be responsible if music is either lost or damaged.

I am very honored to be a part of such a distinguished group. If you have any questions regarding your student’s progress, grades, conduct or our activities, please leave a message on the Doerre choir office phone (832-249-5782) or email me at: dtravis@kleinisd.net. I will return all calls and emails as soon as possible.
