Your child will be given a homework bag. It will go home every Monday with new homework assignments for the week. The bag will have the whole week’s homework inside. It is very important that you review the bag’s contents everyday. All of the homework in the bag must be completed and returned by Friday to receive full credit. Your child has the freedom to complete the homework bag throughout the week at his/her own pace. Listed below are the contents of the homework bag.
Reading Book
This is a book for your child to read throughout the week. It is on their instructional reading level, so they may not know how to read all of the words. Please don’t tell them the words they miscall. Encourage them to use their reading strategies to figure it out on their own. After reading ask them: What was the story about? Who were the characters? What was the setting? What was the problem? What was the solution? Was there a theme in the story?
Spelling Spiral
All spelling homework will be written in this spiral. Every week the homework is the same, the words just change. Further detail on spelling homework is glued in the spelling spiral.
Reading Vocabulary Ring
Every week we have 3-5 new reading vocabulary words. The list will be added to the ring each week. We will have vocabulary quizzes about every 3 weeks. Make sure your child is reviewing the words. They should know the definition and be able to use the word in a sentence. Please do not remove any of the pages on the ring. We will add to it throughout the year. The ring will need to be returned to me at the end of the year.
Math Worksheets
About 3 math worksheets will be sent home every week. Both front and back must be completed unless instructed otherwise. These will be review worksheets from lessons taught one week prior.
Assignment Book
This looks like a weekly calendar. Your child will write all the weekly homework assignments and any upcoming events or test information in this book.
Please make sure to check your child’s homework bag every Monday. You may want to monitor their progress throughout the week as well. This may seem like a lot of information to learn, but after a few weeks of practice your child will have the routine memorized! Thank you so much for your cooperation. Let’s work together to have a great year!
