Dear Parents,
Field Day time is right around the corner. This year, we will be having Field Day in a station format rotating students through many races, games, and relays just like we did last year. We received much positive feedback from parents, students and teachers for last year’s Field Day. Volunteer parents and grandparents monitored all of the stations and made everything run very smoothly with all having loads of fun.
We would like to have another smooth running Field Day with loads of fun again, so, we are asking for your help. We need volunteers to run all of the stations - many, many volunteers. The only way that we can have this type of fun-filled Field Day for your children is with your help. Please remember that when volunteering at your school KISD district policy requires that you be screened with a background check approved by KISD security. Applications for that screening, if you have not already been approved, can be picked up from the front desk at Brill.
The Kindergarten Field Day will be half a day in the afternoon and the 1st through 5th grades will be a full day with a session in the morning from 8:40am –11:10 and a session in the afternoon from 12:30-2:40. Dates for the Field Days are listed below.
It would be very wise to have your child bring a water bottle to school on Field Day. (Actually, that’s a good idea for hydration everyday.) Most Field Day events will be held outdoors. The need for hydration will be great. Water stations will be scheduled in the afternoon with a water/bathroom break in the morning.
We are looking forward to having a great time on Field Day, creating many special memories for our children. Thank you for your continued support. We love seeing you at our school functions and look forward to saying “hello.”
Sincerely,
The Brill Physical Education Staff

1.Obstacle Course
On the signal “go” the students will run through the obstacle course one at a time from each team (over and around a variety of equipment), then run back and tag the next person in line. Students do not perform any of the activities on the way back. The team that finishes the race first and is sitting crisscross is awarded 1st place.
2.Over/Under Relay
The 1st player passes the ball overhead to the second player, who passes it through the legs to the third player, who passes it overhead to the fourth player and so on. The last player carries the ball to the front of the line and passes the ball overhead to the second player, etc. The first team to finish with all players having had a turn starting at the front line and are sitting down is awarded 1st place.
3. Make it, Take It*
Students line up behind their color spot. Many poly spots are scattered on the ground all around a bucket. On signal “go”, 1st person in each line runs to a spot of their choice carrying a beanbag in their hand. Keeping 1 foot on the spot, they attempt to toss their beanbag into the bucket using an underhand throw. If the beanbag “makes it” into the bucket, the student gets to “take it”(THE SPOT) back and the bean bag to his team. If the student leaves the spot after making the bucket, they cannot have the spot. (Even if it is only 1 step.) They have to make it and take it (the spot) right then before advancing to get their beanbag. If the student “misses” they pick up their beanbag and run back to their team to tag the next person in line and hand that next person the beanbag. Students take turns. Game is over when all the spots are gone and have been collected by the teams. Each team counts their spots. Team with most spots is awarded 1st place. Please note: students must carry their beanbag back to their starting point. Beanbags may not be thrown back to the line.
4. Basketball Relay
Teams line up behind colored spots. On the signal “Go” the 1st person in each line will dribble a basketball down around a cone and back, giving the ball to the next person in line when they reach the spot. The team that finishes 1st and is sitting crisscross with their ball on the starting spot wins.
5. Scooter Races
On the signal “go” the 1st person in each line will ride the scooter down around a cone and back, tagging the next person in line. Team is finished when everyone has had a turn. There will be two races on the scooter: sit with bottom on scooter going backward and laying down on stomach using hands and feet to move scooter like an alligator. Students sit crisscross when finished with scooter upside down on their spot. First team finished with each race is awarded 1st place.
6. HOOPS
Students line up behind their color spot in front of the baskets. On signal “go” first player in each line steps up and shoots the ball at the basket. If the basket is made, their team gets one point. Player retrieves ball and hands it to the next person in line. Play continues taking turns. When time is up, the team with the most points is awarded 1st place.
7. Treasure Hunt*
Scatter cones in a large area. Seven red, seven blue, and seven yellow beanbags (total of 21) will be hidden under the cones. Orange team will look for red beanbags, blue team will look for blue beanbags and yellow team will look for yellow beanbags. On signal “go,” the 1st person in each line runs to look under any cone for their colored beanbag. If the student finds their color beanbag, the student takes turns the cone on its side and takes the beanbag back to their team and places it in their team basket and then tags the next person in line. If the student finds nothing under the cone, the student lays that cone on its side and returns to tag the next person in line. If the student finds another team’s color beanbag under a cone, the student quickly covers the bean back up with the cone and returns to their line to tag the next player. The student can only look under ONE cone. The first team to find all 7 of their colored beanbags in their basket and are sitting criss-cross is awarded 1st place. Have students turn their back to the game, closing their eyes, while you hide the beanbags again for the next game if you have enough time.

Morning games
Keep It Up (No Recorded Scoring)
Six players will be used for a game. 2 partners will hold a stretch jump band up for the net and two teams of two partners will play balloon volleyball across the net. The balloon has to be hit by both team members (1 time each) before it goes over the net. Upon a mistake or missed balloon ball, the players making the out or miss become the net holders. (If only 4 players are available for a game, 2 players hold the net while one player plays another.)
Outs:
1. Each player on a team does not hit the balloon one time
2. A team hits the balloon past the net holders going “out of bounds” on the side (there is no back line)
3. A player leaving the floor (jumping up) to hit a ball (feet must stay on the floor)
4. A player touches the net. (The balloon may hit the net and go over and be in play.)
1st & 2nd Grade Modifications: One hit to get the balloon over the net is allowed. If two hits to get balloon over net are needed, one hit must be made by each player.
Scooter Relay (Scoring Recorded)
On the signal “go” the 1st person in each line will ride the scooter down around the cone and back, tagging the next person in line. Team is finished when everyone has had a turn. There will be three races on the scooter: sit on scooter going backward, laying down on stomach using hands and feet to move scooter (alligator), and if time permits, forward down around cone and back backwards. Students sit crisscross when finished with scooter upside down on their spot. First team finished with each race is awarded 1st place. (Please note: students are not allowed to stand or kneel on scooters. It is unsafe.)
Speed Stacks (Scoring Recorded)
On the signal “go” the 1st person in each line runs to the table and then begins stacking the speed stacks cups. They must upstack and downstack their cups before running back to tag the next person in line. (Proper procedure is upstack, upstack, and upstack. Then go back to the first stack and begin downstack.) Listed below are the different stacks that each grade level will be doing. Students sit crisscross when finished. (Cups must be upright before they leave the table. They cannot be lying on their side.) First team finished and sitting crisscross is 1st place winner.
Stacks: Grades 1,2………3-3-3, 3-6-3
Grades 3,4,5 ……3-3-3, 3-6-3, 6-6
Basketball Relay (Scoring recorded)

On the signal “Go” the 1st person in each line will dribble a basketball down around a cone and back, giving the ball to the next person in line when they reach the spot. The team that finishes 1st and is sitting crisscross with their ball on the starting spot wins. If time permits, next race can be done backwards or one race with right hand, next with left hand, next race backwards down and forward back.
Bronco Toss (Horseshoes) (Scoring recorded)
Students line up behind their spot starts. One student from each team comes out to throw line and throws a horseshoe at their stake. Scoring: Ringer = 3 points, Shoe in Count = 1 point (a shoe in Count is a horseshoe that is either a leaner or within 6” of the thrower’s stake.) Team with most points is awarded 1st place.
Tetherball (1st & 2nd Grades) (No Recorded Scoring)
Students play tetherball by rules given in PE class. Students are not allowed to hang onto or pull the tetherball. The game is started with two players, each having a half circle in which to play. One player (newcomer) picks to serve and the other player gets to select direction (champion) the ball will wrap pole. One player will serve to start. The other player must touch the ball or the ball must wrap 4 times around the pole before the server may touch the ball again. Player may be champion 2 times then retire to end of line.
Outs:
1. Server touching the ball before other player
2. Touching the rope
3. Touching the pole
4. Stepping over or reaching over the boundary centerline
5. Hitting the ball 2 times in a row on one side (ball must leave area and come back for player to hit it again)
6. Ball hitting any part of the body other than the hands and forearms (Players are encouraged to keep their hands up in front of their face/head.)
Jump Rope/Hula Hoop Relays (scoring Recorded)
Students are in a line behind their spot. First student in each line is given a hula-hoop. On “go” command, student begins jumping through hoop with hoop turning as student is running to turning line and back to the student’s line. Hoop must be jumped through when going forward. The hoop may not be just carried. Hoop is handed to next student and race continues until all have gone. Second race is done with a jump rope substituted for hula-hoop. Students take turns. First line that finishes is awarded 1st place . Do as many races as possible.
Amoeba Race (Scoring recorded)
Each team makes a circle holding elbows, hands, or wrists at the starting line. A nerf soccer ball is placed inside the circle. The team must proceed with locked hands or arms to the finish line keeping the soccer ball inside the circle using foot taps or dribble. The first team across the finish line is awarded 1st place. If none of the teams reach the finish line, places will be awarded based on how close the frozen teams are to the finish line.
Teams must freeze if any of the following occurs:
1. Someone falls down
2. Arms or hands become unclasped
3. The ball squirts out of the circle
Do as many rounds as possible.
Frisbee Golf (Scoring Recorded)
Student begins on “Go” command throwing Frisbee at black tire ring at end of course. When the player gets the Frisbee into the tire, the Frisbee is retrieved and is handed to the next student in line who begins again. Team that finishes first is 1st place.
Fast Feet (Ladder Race) (Scoring Recorded)
Students traverse the ladder using different stepping patterns. 1st team finished is 1st place and so on. Encourage proper technique and foot placement.
Stepping patterns: 1 foot in each; two feet in each (right, then left); lateral two step (starting out, then right, left in the box and then back out); and the side straddle (starting behind 1st box, feet out to side, then in box at same time).
Obstacle Course (Scoring recorded)
On the signal “go” the students will run through the obstacle course one at a time from each team (over and around a variety of equipment), then run back and tag the next person in line. Students bypass obstacles on the way back and run straight to their line to tag off next student. The team that finishes the race first and is sitting crisscross is awarded 1st place. Repeat as many times as is possible.
Texas Shootout (Scoring recorded.)
Students line up at numbered cones. On signal “go” first student in each line dribbles down to a white line in front of their basket and shoots until they make the basket from behind the white line. Ball must be dribbled to and from the shooting basket. Students hand off ball behind their number cone and next student takes their turn. First team with all team members finished and with team sitting crisscross is 1st place winner of that round. Do as many rounds as time allows.
Crab Soccer (No recorded scoring.)
A class is divided into two teams for this game. (Blue plays yellow with orange team being divided in half.) One team sits on one side of centerline while the other team sits on the opposite side at start of game. Students should be spread out and sitting in a crab walk position (hands behind body on the floor and feet flat on the ground). Hands and feet support body. Each team has 1 goalie and 2 defenders designated that play behind white line marking goalie box. No opposing team members may play in this area. Game starts when parent tosses ball to the students. Players use their feet to kick the ball and may also head the ball. Players try to kick the ball past their opponent’s goal line between the goal cones for 1 point. Game is continuous. When point is scored, goalie just kicks ball back into play. Team with the most points wins the game. Students may not use hands to hit the ball. Walls and ceiling are considered inbounds.
AFTERNOON GAMES

Students must have one foot on their team spot when shooting for shot to count. Team with most points is awarded 1st place.
Bronco Stomp (Scoring recorded.)
Parents/Teachers tie a string onto shoelace or right above shoe top of each student in the class. Each team in the class has a different color balloon. The string has a balloon attached. The string will be about 18” long. Students line up around playing square. On signal “go,” students begin to try to stomp the other team’s balloons without touching the other student.
Students must stay within the boundary lines. At the end of the game, remaining balloons are counted. Team with most balloons remaining is awarded 1st place.
Water Station – children will have a few minutes to hydrate and cool down. A cup of water will be provided. Bottles may not be filled at this station. Children are requested to fill bottles when they are inside on breaks. There will also be a designated area for children to sit in the shade and take a break.

The last player carries the ball to the front of the line and passes the ball overhead to the second player, etc. The first team to finish with all players back in their starting positions, sitting down is awarded 1st place.
Variations: Repeat relay, except everyone passes the ball overheads; Repeat relay, except pass the ball through the legs of all the players until it reaches the last player; Repeat relay, except pass the ball turning to the side to hand the ball to the next player.
Skeleton Race - (5th grade) (Scoring Recorded)
Students work together in their teams to assemble a poly skeleton puzzle correctly. They will also name the bones with the names provided. One point is awarded for each puzzle piece placed in the correct position and one point is given for each name on the correct bone. Team with the most points is awarded 1st place.
Make It, Take It (Scoring recorded.)
Ring Toss (Scoring recorded.)
Student tosses ring from starting spot at a peg pipe. If ring lands leaning against but not on peg (a leaner), 1 point is awarded. If the ring lands on the peg all the way down with peg in middle of ring, 5 points are awarded. Student retrieves ring and goes to end of line. Team with the most points is awarded 1st place.
Hooperation (Scoring recorded.)
Students stand side by side in a line with hands joined. There will be 8 hula-hoops on the ground beside the first person in line. On the signal “go” the first person in line picks up one hula-hoop and puts the hoop over his/her head. The student may not use the free hand any more at this point. The students have to cooperatively move the hoop down the line over head, stepping feet through until the hoop is at the finish. When the hoop is on the free arm of the last person in line, the last person may use their free hand to lay the hoop on the ground, starting their stack of hoops. When the hoop is on the ground, the next hoop may be started down the line. If hands break at any time, the hoop has to be returned to the starting point. First team with 8 hoops stacked at the end of their line is awarded 1st place.
Chinese Jump Rope (No Scoring)
Students play Chinese jump rope. They will get into groups of 3-4 students each.
Hearty Heart Tag (No Scoring)
Students get in groups of 4-5 players. One player is the tagger (Bad Fat). The other players join hands in a cirlcle with one of the players in the circle being designated “Hearty Heart.” The players move their circle around, somewhat spinning, to protect Hearty Heart from getting tagged. Remind students that tags are “nice touches.” Change players around every couple of minutes or so. The tagger may not reach over or through the circle to tag Hearty Heart. If the circle breaks, if someone in the circle falls down, or if the tagger tags Hearty Hearty, the tagger wins.
At the Hop & Ice Cream Cone Relays (1st-2nd grades)
At the Hop: each line is given a playground ball. One student at a time from each line will place the ball between their knees or shins and hop to the turning line and back and give the ball to the next player in line. The students may not hold the ball and if the ball pops out, they have to pick it up and resume hopping. First team done and sitting criss cross is 1st place winner.
Ice Cream Cone Relay: First person in each line holds a small cone (towards bottom of cone) and puts their playground ball on top like an ice cream cone. Spare hand is put behind the back. Students balance their cone to turning line and back. If ice cream is dropped, ball must be put back on cone and player resumes relay. First team done and sitting criss cross is 1st place winner.
Pass It Back (3rd- 5th grades) (Scoring Recorded)
Teams are in a line standing one behind the other. There is a hula-hoop in front of the first person in line filled with several objects. Several yards behind the line is another hula-hoop that is empty. The first player picks up one object and hands it to the next player and then runs to the end of the line. Each player runs to the end of the line after passing until the line reaches the empty hula-hoop and can drop the first item into hoop. The line then runs back to the start to begin again with a new object to pass. Items must be handed hand to hand and not thrown. The race is over when one team gets all of the objects to the end of the game and is sitting at the start line criss cross That team gets 1st place. (The most difficult thing in this game is for the students to remember to go to the back of the line, to stay in a straight line, and that they always follow the same person.)
Treasure Island (Scoring Recorded)
Students line up behind their designated team spot. Each team will have a designated “pirate” to “guard” the island treasure. There is “treasure” within a rope-encircled island that the teams will be trying to get. The object of the game is to try and gather as much treasure as possible for your team. The pirates will be trying to stop the taking of the treasure by tagging. Game rules: one student from each team at a time tries to get one piece of treasure off the island and safely back to their team without getting tagged. The pirates will try to tag any of these students. When the student gets tagged, they must return any treasure gotten back to the island and return to the end of their line and the next student takes their turn. Pirates may not step onto the island, but a player trying to get treasure may, but may only stay their 3 seconds. The player may pick up treasure on the island, stay a 1-2-3 count and then try to return to their line. If the player stays more than a 1-2-3 count, they have to drop the treasure and return to the end of the line. Trade out pirates about every couple of minutes or when you see pirates wilting.
The team with the most “treasure is awarded 1st place.
Safety Notes: Tags = “nice touches” without hitting or slapping or pushing. Students are not allowed to dive on the ground to get to the island, their line, or dive at someone to tag. Put yellow vests on pirates so they can be easily identified. Stop game to go over safety procedures again when necessary.
Treasure Hunt (Scoring recorded.)
Scatter cones in a large area. Seven red, seven blue, and seven yellow beanbags (total of 21) will be hidden under the cones. There will be approximately 30 cones. Orange team will look for red beanbags, blue team will look for blue beanbags and yellow team will look for yellow beanbags. On signal “go,” the 1st person in each line runs to look under any cone for their colored beanbag. If the student finds their color beanbag, the student takes the beanbag, lays the empty cone on its side, and runs back to their team and places it in their team basket and then tags the next person in line.
Variation: Students look for their colored beanbags, but this time they set the cone up instead of laying it down on its side. More advanced game. (Similar to memory game.)
