George Washington Portrait and Flag |
As we exchange dollar bills for goods and services, we may not remember that the picture on the dollar bill is a testimonial to George Washington, the 1st president and father of our country.
In April 2008, the Alternative Classes became a recipient of a limited edition copy of Rembrandt Peale's famous "porthole" portrait of George Washington, courtesy of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Alternative Classes received the portrait and an American flag that has been flown over Mount Vernon as a result of efforts by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association to honor and celebrate George Washington. |

Military Service of Oval O. Huff |
An American flag of significance hangs in the Annex cafeteria. The flag was donated by Alternative Classes special education teacher Mr. John Huff. This flag draped his father's coffin. Oval O. Huff proudly served our country during World War II. While in Germany, Mr. Huff's father was a military policeman. Mr. Huff has said of his father, "He felt it was his duty to support our country and defend the freedom which he and our family have enjoyed for so many years. Dad felt that too many people took that freedom for granted, and they needed to realize that in fact, freedom is not free." | |
