 Monthly focus for August

The time you have been waiting for has arrived. August 26th is our first day of school!  Each month, you will receive a parent focus via the counselor web page. This month's focus is preparing your student for the first day of school. As with anything in life change sometimes brings about anxiety. So, how can you lessen anxiety for your student this year?

1. Build Excitement- As you and your child prepare for the new school year, start talking to your child about what they can expect for their first days of school.

2. Prepare your student- Take the time to visit the school prior to opening. You may attend Meet the Teacher on August 22nd from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. If you are unable to attend meet the teacher, make sure you drive your student by the school and let them see where they will be attending school.

3. Create a beginning of the year tradition- For some parents; you might take pictures as your student leaves for the morning. Your tradition may be talking to your student about expectations for the year. Some parents create poster boards with your child's name that says "Student is going to ___ (insert grade) grade"

4. Leave quickly- On the day that school starts, remember not to linger too long as this signals to the child that something is wrong. Remember, it is appropriate for the child if you have a quick entrance and quick exit; staying around too long communicates to the child that there might be something wrong.

All these tips will help your child to get accustomed to their new school, while lessening any anxiety that may be associated with the start of school.
