Hello, Benfer Bobcats! My name is Mrs. Weatherford and I am excited about all of the musical opportunities that we will be exploring this school year.  Our music class is an active place, a place for singing, listening, playing games, reading and writing music, playing instruments, moving and dancing. I love sharing music with our students!

Every Bobcat learns concepts and elements of music based on the TEKS for their grade level. One of the ways that is done is through Core Songs. Each nine weeks each grade will learn a Core Song that introduces new concepts and skills, while reinforcing previously learned content. Skill grades including singing, rhythm, playing the song on an instrument, and writing the song on the staff are taken at the end of each nine weeks. Check out the Core Song link on the left to see what we are singing and have your child sing for you!

Al Klein ISD students in grades 1-5 participate in the nation-wide Music Memory Listening program. Check out the link on the left to see what music your child will be listening to this year. We listening to all sorts of music, from Baroque music by Bach, to opera and symphony excerpts, and even jazz and music by exciting new composers.

Benfer students have a variety of performance opportunities. Our 2nd Grade students will be presenting a Veteran's Day Program on Friday Nov. 10th during the school day. Our 3rd Graders present an evening music showcase in May. And - every Friday morning, we invite a class to sing our school song during the morning announcements!

In addition, Benfer 4th and 5th grade students may participate in our amazing Benfer Choir. No audition is necessary, only a desire to sing, practice and come to rehearsals and performances. Our choir meets before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15 - 7:50. Our first rehearsal will be on Tuesday Sept. 12th at 7:15 in the music rooms. A letter and permission form will be sent home in Tuesday Folders in late August. If you know that your child would like to be a part of our choir, check out the sales on long khaki pants that are abundant at this time of year. Our choir uniform is those same khaki pants with our choir polo shirt, which can be ordered after choir begins. In November, our choir will be performing a Veteran's Day Program at a nearby assisted living center. In December, our choir presents a fully staged holiday musical, with our evening performance being on December 19th at 7 PM. We hope lots of our talented Bobcats will join us this year!

Our 5th graders have an opportunity to learn to play a string instrument through an after school program taught by orchestra director from Strack Intermediate School. The Klein Collins HS orchestra will visit our school on Friday, Sept. 1st, perform for our 5th graders and allow any 5th grader who is interested to "try out" an instrument. A sign up form will be given to interested students at that time.
