Welcome to Theatre Arts. Theatre arts is a collaborative art that requires students to work together while supporting one another in their endeavors. Theatre students will work both in groups and in pairs for most of the assignments, developing many vital skills that will transcend the classroom and remain with them throughout life. Some of the characteristics that constitute a successful theatre arts student include: a positive attitude, the ability to think creatively, and a general willingness to try different concepts.

A positive attitude is the cornerstone for a successful experience in theatre class.

Expectations:

  • Be prompt - Be on time and in your seat when bell rings.

  • Be prepared - Bring all supplies to class each day (paper, notebook, scripts, pens/pencils, etc.)

  • Be polite - Respect others and their property. Raise your hand to respond to and to ask questions. In order for a theatre class to function properly, there must be an environment of respect and order. Refrain from bringing food and drink into the theatre classroom.

  • Be productive - Remain on task at all times.

  • Be personable - Conduct yourself as a person with whom you would enjoy spending time.

Please, observe all Doerre school rules.

In the event that disciplinary actions are necessary, the following procedure (s) will be taken:

  1. Verbal warning

  2. Verbal warning and teacher documentation

  3. Student / teacher conference and parent contact

  4. Disciplinary referral to assistant principal

  5. Serious infractions will be sent directly to the office.

Grading Policy:

Grading is structured so that students who fully participate in classroom activities and complete all assignments should do well in class. Students will earn grades for class participation, class work, quizzes, tests, projects, and performances.

Students are required to attend one play performance each semester and provide a brief synopsis of the play, along with the playbill.

Grading:

60% major

40% daily

Major grades consist of group, duo, and solo performances, play attendance, and tests, and major projects. Daily grades include class participation, play and scene rehearsals, journal assignments, quizzes, and displays of audience etiquette.

There will be a penalty for late grades/assignments (both daily and major).

Supplies:

Two boxes of Kleenex, 1-pencil,  1-highlighter

Parents, please send the 2-tissue boxes, 1-highlighter, and 1-roll of clear tape with your child by

Monday, September 11th.

Volunteering: Theatre Arts needs your help. I need someone who  will “head” the Sign-Up Genius sites for the various activities, or a few people. If you are interested in helping out for theatre team, fundraiser, after school, UIL, or with any other of the events that will occur throughout the year, please let me know ASAP. Please email me at kcobbblack1@kleinisd.net.

I have 2-3 opportunities coming up in September/October 2017, for our fundraiser. If anyone can be here in the cafeteria before school to accept orders, then return to collect payment, please let me know asap! You can stay next door in my side room and collect orders and monies throughout the day as well.

Theatre Arts Syllabus

Welcome to Theatre Arts. Theatre arts is a collaborative art that requires students to work together while supporting one another in their endeavors. Theatre students will work both in groups and in pairs for many of the assignments, developing many vital skills such as public speaking, enhanced self-confidence, a social network, and a sense of identification that will transcend the classroom and remain with them throughout life. Some of the characteristics that constitute a successful theatre arts student include: a positive attitude, the ability to think creatively, and a general willingness to try different concepts.

Objectives: To develop self-confidence, public speaking proficiency, and to realize how theatre arts crosses the curriculum in each core class one way or the other. Topics Covered: syllabus below Pantomime, Improvisation, Storytelling, Prose, Poetry, Play Wrighting, Production and the Process, Play Performance, Monologues, Acting, Duet Acting, HI/DI, Theatre History, Lip Sync, Careers in THE INDUSTRY, Debate, Audience Etiquette, Commercials, Film, and more.

Grading: Constant opportunities for refinement, failing forward is the theme of our grading system. (specifics are 60-major, 40-daily). Exams are generally rubrics, oral, or project-based activities culminating in a final presentation (students teach students and peer-tutor in some situations).
