Health and Fitness Community Day
Last Saturday, the Epps Island community celebrated health and fitness day. Several vendors provided free services and entertainment. Wal-Mart quenched our thirst with free water and provided free vision screening. State Farm and AmeriGroup provided free items and insurance information. The Texas Women University provided free health screening, including measuring weight, height, and blood pressure. Also, children had fun through interactive games learning about good nutrition and healthy living. Next, WIC offered support to pregnant or recent mothers with directions about the program's application. SmileBarn brought a delightful smile to all participants by teaching about good dental hygiene and examining participants pearly whites.

Additionally, Chick-Fil-A filled our tummies with delicious sandwiches while we laughed with their cow, games, and coupons. The Warrior Dash team of Ms. Rangel, Ms. V. Palma, Ms. Bowlen, Ms. Ro and Ms. Tucker displayed the pictures from their 5K mud race that they competed in during Spring Break this year showing the students and families how much fun exercise can be.

Besides, the Hernandez' Zumba classes blasted the hard top with energetic music and dances. Tiger school mascot participated in Zumba and volleyball as well as promoting that Epps Island spirit! Volleyball, rock climbing, and tug of war were all going on simultaneously to help entertain and exercise participants. Furthermore, Wizard Bounce brought the double sided obstacle course so kids (and staff) could race each other from beginning to end.

Finally, children, parents and family members both young and old participated in the 1.8 mile fun run/walk. For their participation they received a raffle ticket for many different prizes. T-shirts were sold to commemorate the day for only $2. Health and Fitness community day was simply energizing!

American Association of University Women: Educational Fellowship Fund Grant
Epps Island is immensely honored to have Ms. Buron as the recipient of an educational grant through AAUW. She wrote and won this grant, which will be used to support the bookstore that has been on campus for more than 20 years. It is operated exclusively by students, with a teacher who oversees the book ordering. The purpose of the bookstore is to provide low-cost, new books to students. Over the years, the Student Bookstore has become the main resource for students and families to purchase books on this Title I campus. With the help of the AAUW, the store was able to restock their shelves with new books during the year and stay in business.
